I have been using AVG very happily for some months. However, I got the sasser worm and although I could run the patch in safe mode I could not do so normally.
At the same time my AVG stopped working - it would open for a second or two and then close. Prior to this it was working fine - even when sasser was affecting my lsas.exe file (I ran a sweep a day or two ago and it had a couple of hits. I have even gone as far reinstalling avg but to no avail. Occasionaly I get a message that says that some sort of key windows driver is missing. I decided that I would reload my OS (XP Pro). This had the unfortunate effect of removing the patch that I had just spent the last hour applying (as well as all other patches that I have applied - not many I admit) and making my modem not recognised by my PC - a common problem with PCs such as mine which originally took Win98 I belive. Can anyone explain why this has happened, and what I can do about it. If what is causing the problem is a virus how do I get it off if my AVG won't work. As you can imagine I am really not happy about this and would really apprciate some help. Larry ![]() |

A possible corruption of the anti-virus. You might try to reinstall AVG, install a updated version if avaliable. Else try the system restore for WinXP to the date which AVG is still working ok.

I have already installed a new version, as I said. Now I have replaced my OS, restore doesn't work.

It also sounds like maybe the uninstall didn't uninstall everything. Go to see if there's an AVG folder and get rid of it. I'd also dig out some registry utility that cleans the registry (There are some free ones but I don't know what to recommend, maybe someone else can help). Clean all entries related to avg from your registry. Reboot that and try again.
ALSO did you try a system restore? If you have XP you can restore your system to a prior point in time. |

I could not uninstall the thing either as the uninstaller wouldnt work either. I decided to try to manually delete the files.
it is the case, however, that one of the files just would not delete, no matter what I did I could not remove it. In the end I shifted it to another folder. I guess it may still be causing a problem. Can' use system restore becuase as I said I reinstalled my OS to try to fix the 'key windows driver is missing error'. Restore doesn't seem to want ot put my pc back to before this point. I think my PC is ********. I detest people who write or release viruses, I would very gladly take a bat to them. Larry |
