Do you celebrate Thanksgiving?
I would like to take this opportunity and wish all of our American friends on this forum
a very happy Thanksgiving day tomorrow. May we all have many reasons to be grateful and give thanks for all our blessings... And to all our non-American friends? The same wishes... whether you celebrate this beautiful holiday or not! |

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who celebrates it, and happy Thursday to those who don't. Yikes..the holiday season is upon us again. I haven't recovered from last year yet! Really.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all in the USA, don't eat too much of that pumpkin pie!
I was wishing this to Susan last month, and asking why Canada celebrate earlier than the USA. I think I know the answer now, just wondered if any of you know? Malc |

Okay, one of the main reaons is because out growing season is horter than the American one...so our parliament changed the date in 1957. Happy Thanksgiving to all the Americans on the board!!
I like having ours in October because than you get a little over two months to relax your tummy before Christmas is upon us again!! Whereas you guys have it only one month before Christmas. We should all be grateful for all our blessings throughout the year, there is generally someone a lot worse off than yourself(my mom used to tell us this as children everytime we thought we were so hard done by). We don't have thanksgiving, but we have Australia Day. Is thanksgiving a celebrating of the discovery of America? (my apologies if wrong) Australia Day is the 26th of January and marks the day the first fleet sailed into sydney habour to found a new colony.

Thanksgiving is a day the pilgrims created to give thanks for their abundant harvest provided by God for them. They also had local, friendly tribes of Indians attend the festivities which generally lasted for 3 consecutive days.

I guess our closest comparison in the UK would be 'harvest festival' (September I think) but we don't really make a big deal of it.

We don't celebrate the American or Canadian Thanksgiving holiday here in Israel. We have plenty of other (Jewish) holidays. (some think too much).
This year I sort of celebrated the Canadian Thanksgiving since I was at the time visiting my sister that lives in Toronto, and we were having a very good time on Thanksgiving weekend. I think the closest thing to thanksgiving that we have here in Israel is the the Shavuot holiday, that traditionally includes harvest festival. Thousands of years ago it meant bringing offerings from the new spring harvest to the temple in Jerusalem. Nowadays agricultural communities have some sort of celebrations and everyone gets a short vacation. |
