Personally, I'd steer clear of legacy servernames, it's just one more thing that can go wrong.

I agree. I don't know which are the legacy server names.

Dr.S is likely referring to www.fastmail.fm which was (supposedly) phased out more than two years ago now.

mail.messagingengine.com is what we are supposed to be using.

As Fastmail still had a reference to the old name (in their FAQ) and as it still functions (as it should) I thought I would make mention of it - possibly Fastmail might want to get rid of it (altogether) now.

edit: messagingengine - a spelling mistake on my part lol

Everyone went pretty smooth except typing in "mail.messagingengine.com" which everyone had to look at several times.

Why not mail.fastmail.fm eh? Or even just fastmail.fm? Would be a lot easier to say and type...

Cheers.

I agree!!!!!!

Typing "mail.messagingengine.com" is a total nightmare.

Simplicity is best.

Welcome to the forums Kbrock.

It seems that mail.messagingengine.com is so unpopular, that folk are even willing to join the forums to expound upon their dislikeness of it

Hate to jump on the Negativity Bandwagon, but I must agree: the server names are indeed quite cumbersome. I stumble over them each and every time I have to enter them (e.g., laptop, desktop, phone, wife's computers, etc.).

But I still love FastMail.

This is a curious thread. I, too, would recommend that they use a shorter domain name, but I would never raise it as an issue, because, in the end, it's fine that it's a personal choice made by the owners.

I believe the decision to use messaginengine.com stems from a decision that Jeremy and Rob made some time ago to branch out into other services, using Fastmail as a model for more general sorts of solutions, mostly related to email. I think the idea was that they were going to build a business under the title "messaging engine," and they wanted fastmail to become a part of that enterprise. Now, though, I don't know whether there is much to distinguish messagingengine from fastmail. But that's not to say that they don't still have plans to develop the messagingengine business (and name).

You are correct of course denverharless, but still, you would wonder why anyone would want to dream up a 'tongue twister', for a word that frequently has to be typed, every time you set up an account.

ps: this thread is fun, I am sure Rob won't mind

Why not paste it in? It's on the FAQ pages, for example.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if I have done just that more than once. However, users may not always have their paste jars handy.

But, somewhat more seriously, here's one answer to your question, from earlier in this thread:

imap.fastmail.fm and
smtp.fastmail.fm

and could not remember (and I tried hard) that the server was messagingengine.com

I just couldn't setup his account and we had to wait until we had access to the web and fastmail's FAQ files.

Please change this names.
In fact, your question/solution would be just as valid if the server name was:

wwrdgfhjdgsdvbsvakkjuinnxdbsbgholghnmslvjqregverlblerlgvlPTfdfdhspaqlhatrhgxbzbdzfbz.com

But perhaps that might make the potential for problems somewhat more obvious to you. (Then again, maybe it wouldn't.)

Help!!!!

I am unable to get my Apple mail program to work with Fastmail. I checked my preferences a million times and I have everything entered properly, but I can't send or receive mail.

I used my "Connection Doctor" and it said something to the effect that it was unable to connect to SMTP server. I am a member and should be able to use SMTP.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
K

If you are using port 25 for SMTP try using port: 587

Some ISP's block port 25

You should have started a new thread for this by the way....

The answer's simple: slow down, take a few moments longer and you'll get it right the first time.

This complaint reminds me of those strange people who whine about rebooting. It takes a couple of minutes out of their lives, So what? Relax, stroke the cat, kiss the wife, look out of the window and admire the scenery. Anything! Nobody's time is that important.

A couple of minutes??? Obviously you've never had the displeasure of using my computer.

Your post reminds me a little of a song that came out a few years ago. How did that go? Oh yes...."Don't worry, be happy...."

But seriously, who would even bother reading this thread (or perhaps this forum in general) if they weren't at least a little obsessive about email?
