As for lurking having a negative connotation, that is not the case in 'net parlance, at least as far as my experience goes. In fact, many forums and newsgroups request that you lurk for a while before posting, so you'll know the conventions of that particular forum and how not to step on people's toes accidentally. The term "lurking", in the electronic communications sense, has a long history. The Jargon File confirms that it isn't pejorative.
