Funny
Having been a fastmail user since day one.
I still like the service. BUT several months a go I was up for renewal So off went the MO and I waited and waited contacted support with "nothing here" I checked again "nothinghere" never to hear any more of it.. and thy stuck me on this god forbid IMAP As I cant check a MO if its been cashed for at least 6 months I was temp had !! NOW I see that they are giving a months FREE membership for the Power outage !! Oh Gads!! What does a "member get"??.. As I see it Im on "onetime" fee paid status... With a little in the till for balance money wise form a convert.. I think $3.. So now word on if it was recieved no way to check it for some more time.. The PO is tired of hearing from me and Im stuck on this god awful IMAP... 10,000 emails for the bandwith??? Dont believe it.. last month I think I was up to abt 60mb and I didnt do much... No i dont send large attachements nor email millions of people So I guess I missed out on the "free" month As they converted me back to a IMAP user.. Geeeez As for the service? Cant beat it for smtp service Imap has alot to be desired |

You seem to be under a common misapprehension. SMTP is for sending, IMAP is for receiving; they are two different and non-comparable services.
The correct comparison is between IMAP and POP, and as IMAP does everything that POP can and a lot that it can't, there's really no comparison there either... |

Robert,
I think you're mistaken here... WindWalker is stuck with IMAP because his account doesn't renew, but is still happy with the SMTP. It can be that I am misreading something herem but it looks to me like WindWalker isn't mixing things up... --K |

Many people still prefer POP3, mainly because its more flexible. You can use another webmail service (most only support POP) to retrieve your FM email. Further, POP3 guarantees that you have a local store, unless you retrieve it locally.
Its universal and much simpler. Frankly, I have high speed connections in the office and at home, etc., so when I'm always connected, I'd rather use the web interface to access the folder store rather than fire up an email client. Configure that client wrong, and you're paying a bandwidth "charge" to download and read your email. |

I mean most people have more access to email services, etc., which allow for POP3 retrieval from other accounts. Therefore, they could use another email service to retrieve their FM email ....
Many email clients don't support IMAP either, and let's face it ... for the average user POP3 is easier to understand and implement. |

well maybe my Evolution email program is screwed up..
I dont I dont do a whole lot and already im at 40 mb of Bandwith.. Last month I was over 60mb... Now mind you I dont send pictures now recieve them often.... I do leave ""some messages on server" after I read them... BAnd my storage is ok { like last month about 2 mb} But this bandwith stuff sucks big time. I run Linix and evolution email program I would run Kmail.. but it wont set up to IMAP of which Im stuck with. |

For me being stuck on a dialup connection, pop3 is clearly superior. If I had the luxury of cable/adsl/satellite then imap would be clearly superior.

Wheb I set ti up for IMAP and tried to login in to fastmail I kept getting error messages "not a IMAP4 server" So I went to Evolution... I dont send HTML. so I dont know whats adding up the bandwith If my MO ever get there or is found {like right} I will go back to SMTP/Pop |

As I see it, the problem with imap is that (many) people have to learn to use email again, and (many) people would rather use it in the way they already know how to. But this is the case with most IT stuff... I must however agree that client support can be a problem from time to time, with some email clients having very poor support for imap. But I do expect this to greatly improve in the time to come... |

Many people want a local store of their emails. Otherwise, for most users, the web interface is just like IMAP after all
allowing them to preview and leave on the server.I don't agree with you. A good POP3 client is faster IMO, and many allow for a preview on the server prior to downloading. I have high speed connections so IMAP is fine, but only if you have a preference for a particular client. Really, I find myself using the web interface instead with FM. Further, for all of the Outlook users out there (not OE), IMAP isn't that attractive, and POP3 is the preferred way to manage their email. To conclude, its good if you had both options .... |
