open / save option

Hi all,
I use Firefox browser, and I have just noticed that after doing a windows up date that I have lost the option of opening or saving an attachment on a Fastmail message. I have also recently re-installed Firefox so that might be the reason.

I found this option very useful. Can anyone help me to re-instate it please?

I click the attachment then I get an option to down load and can save that to my downloads or another folder.

Your re-install of Firefox probably made it start with a new profile (which is a directory full of config & settings files & saved histories etc).

The settings that are relevant are probably those at Firefox's:

Tools - Setttings - General - Files and Applications

where (here anyway) there's a long list of file types & for each you can set what you want FF to do with each. You can subset the list to show just some file/data-types eg all document types by typing doc in the box at the top of the list. To see the options for a specific single type click on that line to select it; a dropdown arrow then appears at the righthand end of that line - click it to (finally!) see its options.

Be aware that you might have to change several lines to cover all the sub-types of what - to you - you might think of as just one type of file. For example an ".rtf" file could be described internally in an email to which it is attached as either "text/rtf" or "application/rtf" - so FF has lines for both options.

Thanks Jeremy, that worked fine for PDF attachments, but now I am trying to select .docx files to do the same thing, but I cannot.

If i put doc into the search bar, only PDF comes up.

Underneath the list of file-types there's a choice for what to do for "Other types" of file. Have you made the right choice there?
