My Startpage virus woe

Does anyone know how to get rid of this thing?

It manifests itself in my Windows/system32 .dll files and nothing seems to be able to shift the thing. I have heard that this does something in system restore and I have tried a few different solutions but thus far nada.

I could do with a hand.

Would a reload of my OS (Win XP) help?

Yes it would help. However I think it isn't a virus but some unknown programs being loaded at the startup.

How would this help then? WOuldn't the programmes still be there unless I formated the disk and went for a total reinstall?

Isn't that's what you going to do?

Nah, that would be a bit drastic, I was thinking of a reload of the OS only. My thinking was that the problems seem to lie in system32 and in system restore, therefore a reload should remove the problem areas.

Don't know if this is the case though.

If you don't wipe out there is a chance the problem will remains. But in Winxp, if you select repair, it may delete off some off system files and reinstall the original files.

Start up in safe mode, at the run, type in msconfig. Look at the startup program list and uncheck any suspicous programs.

I know it's a bit late to reply to this, but I think what Larry proposes to do with Windows is what I for one call a "maintenance reinstall" (reinstall over an existing installation, to repair it), whereas what you proposed (and in extreme cases is sometimes needed) is a "full reinstall" (wipe the existing installation — which in Windows' case means the entire drive — and start again)...
